With a population of just over 200,000, La Paz, capital of Baja California Sur, retains the unhurried pace and feel of old Mexico while offering the modern amenities and comforts of a seaside city. Each step through this enchanting town reveals culture, history and adventure.

stroll + shop

Wander La Paz’s palm-fringed malecón that threads its way along the seaside and guides you towards shops, eateries, monuments and unusual sculptures. Relax under a palapa and watch sailboats glide by until the sun dips into the sea.

explore history + architecture

Wander to La Paz’s main square and explore historic buildings like the Cathedral de Nuestra Señora de la Paz, built in 1860. A few blocks away is the Museum of Regional Anthropology and History of Baja California Sur where more than 1,200 pieces related to the early history of Baja California are on exhibit.

experience arts + culture

Visit artisans who ply their trade and take inspiration from local traditions and nature’s offerings. In their practiced hands, carved wooden statues, textiles, jewelry and pottery come to life, some in the shapes of marine animals. At the restored Teatro y Galeria de la Ciudad (City Theater and Art Gallery) you can take in a performance by local ensembles or visiting performers.

taste the flavors of Mexico

Visit the mercados to find fresh seafood, meats, fruits and vegetables and cook up a regional feast or dine at one of the many gourmet and open-air restaurants where the rhythmic sounds of music serenades you. Or sample some of Mexico’s finest varieties of tequila, learn about its long-standing history, and discover how prickly agave plants are transformed into this tasty liquor.

search for shells

Take a lazy wander along La Paz’s abundant, secluded and pristine beaches. They’re all just a few miles from the city. Venture to Playa El Tecolate, great for setting off for a trip to Espíritu Santo island, or enjoy a fresh fish feast in the shaded surroundings at Playa de Pichilingue. The deserted Playa de Balandra, with its unusual mushroom-shaped rock is a perfect place to kayak. No matter which beach you choose, you won’t be disappointed. They’re all postcard-perfect and safe for swimming.
